Why it’s a specialist job

A piano isn’t heavy furniture. It’s a heavy machine.

An upright runs 200 to 350 kilos and a grand can pass 500. The weight sits high and towards the back, so a piano does not lean over slowly the way a wardrobe does. It goes all at once, and it takes whoever is below it.

Inside is a cast iron frame holding roughly 18 tonnes of combined string tension, plus thousands of moving wooden parts set to tolerances you can measure in fractions of a millimetre. The worst damage is the kind you cannot see on the day. Nothing looks wrong until somebody sits down and plays it a week later.

  • Never lifted by the legs or lid

    Piano legs are decorative joinery, not structure. The lid is not a handle. Weight is taken under the case on a trolley, or on a skid for a grand.

  • Grands travel on their side

    Legs, lyre and pedals come off and the instrument rides on a padded skid board. Upright is exactly the wrong position for a grand on a truck.

How much does piano removal cost in Sydney?
It is a fixed price, not an hourly rate, and it is set by the instrument and the access rather than by how long the day takes. An upright on ground floor at both ends is the cheapest version. A grand with stairs at one end needs more people and more gear, so it costs more. Send four photos and you get the number within two hours, and that number does not move on the day.
Why do you need photos to quote?
Because the two things that set the price cannot be described accurately over the phone. Nearly everyone underestimates their stairs, and plenty of people call a baby grand an upright. Photos of the instrument, the room, the path out and the stairs let us send the right crew size and the right gear the first time.
Can you move a piano up or down stairs?
Yes, and it is the part of the job we plan hardest. Stairs are where almost every piano accident happens, because the crew below is carrying a load that cannot be stopped once it starts moving. We use stair climbers and controlled-descent gear, and we put enough people on it. Tight turns and narrow landings matter more than the number of steps, so photograph those too.
Do you move grand pianos?
Yes. The legs, lyre and pedals come off and the instrument travels on its side on a padded skid board, then goes back together at the other end by the same crew. A grand left sitting upright on a truck is being carried in exactly the wrong position. Baby grands work the same way.
Is my piano insured during the move?
Yes. Goods in transit and public liability cover to $1M applies on every job, and it is included rather than sold as an extra. If your instrument is rare, antique or worth more than a typical household piano, tell us at quote time so the cover can be checked against the value before the day rather than after something happens.
Will my piano need tuning afterwards?
Almost certainly, though not for the reason most people assume. It is the change in room, humidity and temperature that moves the tuning, not the trip itself. Give the instrument two to four weeks to settle in the new room before you book a tuner, otherwise you will pay for the same job twice.
Do you tune pianos as well?
No. We move them, we do not tune them, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. Any piano tuner in Sydney can do it, and most are happy to be booked a few weeks ahead for a date after your move.
Can you move a piano into an apartment?
Yes, and the building usually decides how the day runs. Most towers want a service lift booked, a loading dock window and sometimes a certificate of currency before anyone starts. Tell us the building at quote time and we sort that out. What matters is whether the piano fits the lift, because if it does not the alternative is the stairwell and that changes the crew size.
What if it won’t fit through the door?
It usually will, once the door itself comes off its hinges, which we do as a matter of course. Where it genuinely will not, the options are a window or balcony lift with a hoist, and that is a separate quote arranged in advance. This is exactly what the photos are for. We would rather find it out at quote time than have a crew standing in your hallway.
Do you move pool tables and safes?
Yes. Pool and billiard tables are dismantled, because a slate bed moved in one piece cracks and the frame twists. Safes go on skates with the floor protected underneath, and the weight is the reason we ask what is under the floor at the destination. Gym multi-stations, marble tables and large sculpture come under the same service.
Can you move my piano interstate?
Yes, on our interstate runs, which all start or finish in Sydney. Long distance means the instrument is secured for hours of road movement rather than a twenty minute trip, so it is blanketed, skidded where it needs to be and braced against the truck wall. Expect it to need tuning once it has settled at the other end.
Can you take away a piano nobody wants?
Yes. Old uprights that are past economic repair are surprisingly common, and councils will not take them in a kerbside pickup. We remove and dispose of them through our rubbish removal service. If the instrument is still playable, say so, because a school or community hall will often take it and that is a better outcome than a tip.
