Why it’s a specialist job

A piano isn’t heavy furniture. It’s a heavy machine.

An upright runs 200 to 350 kilos and a grand can pass 500. More importantly, the weight sits high and towards the back, so it doesn’t tip like a wardrobe — it goes suddenly, and it takes whoever is downhill of it with it.

Inside is a cast iron frame under roughly 18 tonnes of combined string tension, plus thousands of moving wooden parts. Damage from a bad move is rarely a scratch on the case. It’s a cracked soundboard or a shifted action, and that costs more to repair than the instrument is often worth.

Never lifted by the legs or lid

Piano legs are decorative joinery, not structure. The lid isn’t a handle. Weight is taken under the case on a trolley, or on a skid for a grand.

Grands travel on their side

Legs, lyre and pedals come off and the instrument rides on a padded skid board. Upright is exactly the wrong position for a grand on a truck.

Stairs are the whole risk

Almost every piano accident happens on stairs, with the crew below carrying a load that can’t be stopped once it starts. Enough people and proper stair gear is the only answer.

How much does piano removal cost in Sydney?
Piano moves are quoted as a fixed price rather than hourly. What sets it is the type of instrument, the stairs and access at both addresses, and the distance. An upright moving between two ground-floor homes nearby is at the low end; a grand coming down a flight of stairs and going up another is at the other. Send photos and you’ll have a fixed quote within two hours.
Why do you need photos to quote?
Because the price is set by access, not just the instrument. We need to see the piano, the room it’s in, the path to the door and any stairs. Four photos takes two minutes and means the quote holds and the crew arrives with the right gear and enough people.
Can you move a piano up or down stairs?
Yes, and it’s the most common piano job in Sydney. Stairs are also where almost every piano accident happens, so they change the crew size and the equipment rather than just adding time. Tell us how many flights and whether there are turns or landings.
Do you move grand pianos?
Yes. Grands and baby grands are dismantled for transport — legs, lyre and pedals come off — and the instrument travels on its side on a padded skid board. Everything is reassembled at the other end by the same crew before we leave.
Is my piano insured during the move?
Yes. Goods-in-transit and public liability cover apply to the instrument. Pianos are frequently worth more than the rest of a household combined, so if yours is particularly valuable, tell your coordinator when you book and we’ll confirm the cover in writing before the day.
Will my piano need tuning afterwards?
Almost certainly, and that’s normal rather than a sign anything went wrong. Pianos go out of tune from the change in room temperature and humidity, not from the drive. Let it settle in the new room for two to four weeks before you book a tuner, or you’ll be paying for the same job twice.
Do you tune pianos as well?
No, we move them. Tuning and regulation is a specialist trade and you want a piano technician, not a removalist, doing it. Any decent tuner will tell you to wait a few weeks after a move anyway.
Can you move a piano into an apartment?
Usually yes, but it needs planning. We’ll need to know the floor, whether there’s a service lift and its internal dimensions, and whether the building requires a lift booking or a certificate of currency for the strata manager. Some older walk-ups genuinely can’t take a grand, and we’ll tell you that before you book rather than on the day.
What if it won’t fit through the door?
It happens, usually with grands in older homes. The options are dismantling further, going through a different opening, or in rare cases a crane or hoist through a window or balcony. We work this out from the photos beforehand, which is exactly why we ask for them.
Do you move pool tables and safes?
Yes. Slate pool tables are dismantled and reassembled — the beds are separate slabs and moving one in a single piece damages both the table and the frame. Safes are moved on skates with the floor protected. Both are quoted the same way as a piano, from photos.
Can you move my piano interstate?
Yes. Interstate piano moves are crated or fully secured for the distance and run on our scheduled routes, so the same crew loads and unloads. See interstate removals for how the routes work.
Can you take away a piano nobody wants?
Yes. Old uprights beyond economic repair are surprisingly common, and they still weigh 300 kilos regardless of whether anyone wants them. We can remove and dispose of one through rubbish removal. If it’s still playable, it’s worth trying to rehome it first — we’ll happily deliver it to whoever takes it.
