Flat Pack & Furniture Assembly in Darwin

Flat pack assembly in Darwin for wardrobes, beds, desks and shelving, built square, anchored to the wall where it should be, packaging taken away. We also dismantle for a move and rebuild at the other end.

There is no IKEA in the Territory, so almost everything arrives after a long freight run. We check every box against the parts list before a panel goes together, because a missing fixing is a different problem up here.

Why flat-pack fails, and it is rarely the furniture

Most flat-pack that ends up wobbly or with doors that will not close was not faulty out of the box. It was built on carpet, tightened in the wrong order, or assembled by one person doing a two-person job.

A wardrobe built out of square looks fine on day one and binds a month later. Chipboard holds a cam lock once. Strip it and the fixing point is gone. Then the retailer points at the assembly, the assembler has left, and you are holding a warranty argument.

  • Square before tight

Fixings go in loose, the carcass is checked for square, then everything tightens in sequence. Tighten as you go and you lock in whatever shape it was in.

  • Built on a hard, level surface

Carpet lets the base flex while you work, so the unit is out of true before it stands up. We lay boards or work on hard floor and move it after.

  • Hand-finished, not driven home

Cam locks get their last turn by hand. A drill on full torque strips the board, and stripped chipboard cannot be re-fixed in the same hole.

  • Raw edges sealed, backs off the wall

Cut edges and unsealed hardboard backs are where moisture gets into particle board. In this climate that matters more than it does down south.

What we build

  • Wardrobes & robes

Including sliding-door units, a genuine two-person job and the one people underestimate.

  • Beds & bed frames

Slat bases, gas-lift storage beds, bunks and trundles, levelled so nothing creaks.

  • Modular sofas & lounges

Sectionals clipped together and set out the way you want the room.

  • Desks & office furniture

Sit-stand frames, chairs and home office setups built and cable-managed.

  • Bookcases & shelving

Squared, backs fitted properly, and anchored to the wall before we leave.

  • Dining tables & chairs

Table bases levelled on tiled or polished floors so nothing rocks.

  • Chests & drawer units

Runners aligned so drawers close flush, where most rebuilds go wrong.

  • Outdoor & shed gear

BBQs, trampolines, cubby houses and garden storage, built in the undercroft or yard.

Will it survive being taken apart?

Worth asking before the truck is booked, and almost nobody in this trade answers it straight. Most flat-pack comes apart and goes back together once, done slowly. Not repeatedly, and not fast.

The fixings decide it. Cam locks with steel dowels are the best case, made to come apart, though the board around the housing crushes a little each time. Coarse screws driven straight into particle board are poor, since the thread cut its own hole and backing it out makes the hole bigger. Glued dowels are usually single use. Nailed hardboard backs are worst, and they are the only thing stopping the unit racking, which is why a rebuilt wardrobe leans.

Send a photo of the back and inside a joint and we will tell you which of yours will survive, before you pay to move it.

If it does come apart, fixings are bagged, labelled and taped to the largest panel, so nobody is hunting cam locks in a box of kitchen things at six in the new place. Flat-packed also takes a fraction of the truck space, which matters if you are paying by the month for storage.

How assembly is priced

Per item for a single piece, hourly once there are several. Ask any quote which of the two you are getting and whether a minimum call-out applies, because that is where the surprises come from.

  • Single item

    Per item

    Fixed from the model number

  • Several items

    Hourly

Usually cheaper than item by item

  • Typical wardrobe

    1 to 2 hours

Sliding doors run 3 to 4

  • Packaging

    Taken away

    Included, not an add-on

Leave the boxes sealed

It sounds backwards, but do not open them before we arrive. Sealed boxes let us inventory the parts against the manual and spot freight damage before anything is built.

That matters more here than anywhere else. Everything has come a long way on a truck, and a part found missing halfway through a build is the difference between finishing today and waiting on the post.

What affects your quote

  • What it is

A bookcase is half an hour. A sliding-door wardrobe is a morning.

  • How many

A whole bedroom in one visit costs less per piece than a single item.

  • Wall anchoring

Timber stud, plasterboard or block, since the wall decides the fixing.

  • Access

Whether the boxes are upstairs already or still at the bottom of the steps.

  • Condition

Freight damage and missing fixings add time before anything is built.

  • Location

Darwin and Palmerston against a run out to a rural block.

We bring everything

You do not need to own a drill. The Allen key in the box is not a tool, it is a token.

Drivers & clutched drills

Torque set low so the board is never stripped, last turns by hand.

Levels & squares

The difference between a unit that looks right and one that is actually square.

Wall fixings for any wall

Stud, plasterboard and masonry anchors, because Darwin walls are not all the same.

Mats & floor protection

Boards to work on and cover for tiles and timber floors underneath.

How it runs

  1. 01 Step

    Send the box label

A photo of the model name and how many pieces. Fixed price back within two hours.

  2. 02 Step

    Parts checked first

Boxes opened on site and every part counted against the manual before a panel goes together.

  3. 03 Step

    Built in the room

Assembled where it lives, square, on a hard surface, and anchored if it needs to be.

  4. 04 Step

    Adjusted and cleared

Doors and drawers set to close flush, packaging flattened and taken away.

Four things most assemblers won't give you

  1. Parts checked before we start

You find out about a missing fixing at the start of the job, not two hours in.

  2. On-time guarantee

The slot we book is the one we arrive in, which matters on a handover day.

  3. No cancellation fees

Delivery ran late or the freight slipped? Move the booking at no charge.

  4. We will tell you no

If a piece will not survive another rebuild, you hear it before it goes on the truck.

Darwin flat pack questions

How much does flat pack assembly cost in Darwin?
Per item for a single piece, hourly once there are several, and hourly is usually cheaper past two or three items. Ask any quote which model you are on and whether a minimum call-out applies. Send a photo of the box label and how many pieces, and a fixed price comes back within two hours.
How long does a wardrobe or a bed take?
A small bookcase is half an hour, a tall one closer to an hour. A single bed is thirty to forty five minutes, a double one to two hours. A standard wardrobe is one to two hours, but a sliding-door wardrobe is three to four and always underestimated. A gas-lift bed with drawers can run to three hours alone.
Do you bring your own tools?
Yes, all of them, including clutched drivers set so they cannot strip the board, and wall fixings for whatever your walls are. You need to own nothing. The Allen key in the box is the main reason home builds end up with rounded fixings.
Can flat pack be taken apart and put back together?
Usually once, done slowly. Not repeatedly, and not in a hurry. IKEA itself says its furniture is not designed for repeated disassembly, that doing it may affect structural integrity, and that it could void the warranty. That is worth knowing before you decide whether a piece is worth moving at all.
Which of my furniture will survive being dismantled?
It comes down to the fixings. Cam locks with steel dowels are built to come apart and are the best case, though the board around the housing crushes each cycle. Coarse screws driven into particle board are poor, since the thread cut its own hole. Glued dowels are usually one use. Nailed hardboard backs are worst, and they are what stops the unit racking, which is why a rebuilt wardrobe leans. Send a photo of the back and inside a joint and we will tell you which of yours is worth moving.
What if parts are missing or damaged?
We find out at the start rather than two hours in, which is why everything is counted against the manual first. Generic screws, cam locks and dowels we carry and substitute on the spot. A proprietary panel has to come from the retailer, and this is where Darwin differs. IKEA supplies spare parts free but by ordinary untracked post, commonly two to four weeks. Plan the build date around that.
There is no IKEA in Darwin, can you still help?
Yes, and it is most of what we build. There is no IKEA store or collection point anywhere in the Territory, so Territorians order online, use a freight forwarder, or have it brought up from Adelaide or Perth. Amart at Berrimah is the main flat pack you can walk in and carry out. However yours got here, it has been on a truck a long way, which is why we check the boxes before building rather than after.
Will the humidity wreck my particle board furniture?
It can, and the board data is blunt. Standard particleboard is not rated for interiors where prolonged high humidity is likely, and at ninety percent relative humidity its moisture content climbs to fifteen or sixteen percent. Raw cut edges and unsealed backs are the way in. Seal edges before assembly, keep backs off external walls, leave an air gap, ventilate closed cabinets. Worth reading your warranty too, since IKEA's guarantee states it does not apply to products placed in a humid environment.
Do you anchor tall furniture to the wall?
Yes, as standard rather than on request. A mandatory Australian information standard on toppling furniture has applied since May 2025, covering bookcases and clothing storage units from 686mm tall and entertainment units of any height. The gap worth knowing is that suppliers are not required to put an anchor in the box, so plenty arrives with a warning label and nothing to fix it with. We bring the anchors and the right fixing for your wall.
I am renting, am I allowed to drill into the wall?
There is a pathway for it here. Under NT tenancy rules a tenant normally needs written consent to alter the premises, but for a safety modification you can ask in writing, the landlord has ten business days to respond, consent must not be unreasonably refused, and no answer in that window is treated as consent. It is at your cost and you may have to make good at the end. Ask before we come and we will use the least invasive fixing that holds.
I am on a posting, doesn't the Defence removalist do this?
No, and it catches people out every posting season. The Defence relocation guide states plainly that the removalist will not disassemble or reassemble prefabricated furniture, so flat pack is the member's own job at both ends. It also tells you to bag the Allen keys and bolts in a labelled container in the priority carton. We pick up either end of that, stripping a house down before uplift or rebuilding it after.
Do you take the packaging away?
Yes, flattened and gone, in the price rather than an add-on. Worth asking anyone you compare us to, because the answer varies and a wardrobe makes more cardboard than people expect. With no council hard waste collection until 2027, it is not a pile you want in the carport.
Should I open the boxes before you arrive?
No, leave them sealed. An unopened box lets us inventory the parts and spot freight damage before anything is built. Once the packaging is off and pieces are spread across a room, it is much harder to tell what is missing from what has been put somewhere else.
Can you fix a build that went wrong?
Usually. The common ones are stripped cam holes, a carcass tightened out of square so the doors bind, a back panel on inside out, and runners never aligned. Most need the piece taken apart before it can be put right, so send a photo and we will tell you honestly whether it is a fix or a write-off.
Do you mount TVs and shelves too?
Yes, and it usually gets booked with the entertainment unit anyway. The cost depends on the wall more than the bracket, since a timber stud is straightforward and block needs different fixings and takes longer. Tell us what the wall is, or send a photo, and we bring the right anchors first time.
