Why flat-pack furniture fails, and it’s rarely the furniture

Most flat-pack that ends up wobbly, sagging or with doors that will not close was not faulty out of the box. It was built on carpet, tightened in the wrong order, or assembled by one person doing a two-person job.

Chipboard holds a cam lock exactly once. Strip it and the fixing point is gone for good, and there is no second hole to try. That is the failure that turns into a warranty argument, where the retailer points at the assembly and whoever assembled it has already left.

  • Square before tight

    Every fixing goes in loose, the carcass gets checked for square, then everything is tightened in sequence. Tighten as you go and you lock the frame into whatever shape it happened to be in.

  • Built on a hard, level surface

    Assembling on carpet lets the base flex while you work, so the unit is out of true before it is even upright. We lay boards or work on hard floor and move it after.

  • Hand-finished, not driven home

    Cam locks and chipboard screws get their last turn by hand. A drill on full torque strips the board, and stripped chipboard cannot be re-fixed in the same hole.

  • Anchored to the wall

    Tall bookcases, drawer units and wardrobes get strapped or bracketed to the wall. Furniture tip-overs are a real hazard in homes with small children, and the bracket in the box only works if someone fits it.

Some furniture will not come out of a room in one piece, and forcing it is how doorframes get gouged and bed frames get cracked. Beds, wardrobes, dining tables and modular units almost always travel better apart.

The reason it is worth having the same team do both ends is the hardware. Every unit gets its fixings bagged, labelled and taped to the largest panel, so nobody is hunting for cam locks in a box of kitchen things at 6pm in the new place.

Flat-packed furniture also takes a fraction of the truck space that assembled furniture does, which matters when you are paying by volume for interstate removals or by the month for storage.

One honest warning. Chipboard flat-pack is not built to come apart and go back together repeatedly. Every cycle costs a little grip in the board. We tell you on the day if a piece is unlikely to survive another rebuild, so you can decide whether it is worth moving at all rather than finding out after it is on the truck.

Worth paying for, or worth a Saturday?

One bedside table is a Saturday morning job and you do not need us. A four-door wardrobe with sliding mirrored doors is a different proposition. It is heavy, it needs two people to hold it square, and getting the doors to run properly is genuinely fiddly.

The jobs people most often regret doing themselves are wardrobes, bunk beds and anything that has to be anchored to a wall. If several items landed in one delivery, having them all built in a single visit costs far less per item than calling someone out for one.

How much does furniture assembly cost in Sydney?
One or two items are priced per item, so you know the cost before we arrive. A full room or a whole house is charged hourly, which works out cheaper across multiple pieces. Complexity matters more than size — a modular wardrobe takes far longer than a bookcase twice its height. Send the item names or a photo of the boxes for a written quote within two hours.
Do you assemble flat-pack from IKEA and other retailers?
Yes. Flat-pack from IKEA, Fantastic Furniture, Freedom, Amart, Kmart, Officeworks, Temple & Webster and the rest of the major retailers, plus imported and online purchases that arrive with poor instructions or none at all. We’re not affiliated with any of them — we just build a lot of their furniture.
How long does assembly take?
A bedside table or small shelf is minutes. A chest of drawers or a desk is usually under an hour. A four-door wardrobe with sliding doors can be most of a morning, especially if it needs levelling on an uneven floor. If you tell us the specific items we’ll give you a realistic window rather than an optimistic one.
Do I need to have the furniture already?
Yes, it needs to be on site and preferably in the room it’s staying in. Deliveries are frequently late or split across days, so book us once the boxes have actually arrived. If a delivery slips, moving the booking costs nothing.
Do you bring tools?
Yes, everything. Power drills with torque control, drivers, allen keys, spirit levels, squares and wall fixings for brick, plasterboard and tile. We also carry common spare hardware — screws, cam locks, dowels and shelf pins — because a pack short one fixing is the usual reason a self-assembly job stalls halfway.
What if a part is missing or damaged?
If it’s a common fixing we’ll usually have a replacement on the van and carry on. If a panel is damaged or a proprietary part is missing, only the retailer can supply it. We’ll build everything else, leave the piece ready to finish, and tell you exactly what to order so the call to the retailer is a short one.
Do you take the packaging away?
Yes, included. Cardboard, polystyrene, plastic and strapping all go with us. It’s a surprising amount of volume — a wardrobe and a bed generate more packaging than most people expect, and it doesn’t fit in a household bin.
Will you anchor furniture to the wall?
Yes, and we recommend it for anything tall. Bookcases, drawer units and wardrobes get strapped or bracketed using the right fixing for your wall type. Furniture tip-overs are a real hazard in homes with young children, and the anchor supplied in the box only works if someone actually fits it.
Can you dismantle furniture for a move?
Yes, and rebuild it at the other end. Beds, wardrobes, dining tables and modular units usually travel better apart, and dismantled furniture takes much less truck space. Every unit’s fixings are bagged, labelled and taped to the largest panel so nothing goes missing between two addresses.
Can flat-pack be taken apart and rebuilt safely?
Usually once or twice, not indefinitely. Chipboard holds a cam lock or screw well the first time and loses a little grip each cycle, so a piece that’s already been moved twice may not survive a third rebuild. We’ll tell you on the day if something looks marginal, so you can decide whether it’s worth moving before it goes on the truck.
Do you do wardrobe assembly?
Yes — hinged, sliding and modular wardrobe systems, levelled so the doors run true and anchored to the wall. Worth noting we assemble supplied wardrobe units rather than building custom joinery into a wall cavity; a built-in fit-out is a cabinetmaker’s job, not an assembly one.
Can you mount a TV or install shelving on the wall?
We can wall-mount TV brackets and fix supplied shelving where the wall construction allows it. What we won’t do is guess — if a wall needs a stud check, a masonry anchor or there’s any doubt about what’s behind the plasterboard, we’ll say so rather than putting a hole in something expensive.
Do you assemble office furniture?
Yes. Desks, sit-stand frames, chairs, filing units, shelving and full workstation systems. For a commercial fit-out or relocation it’s usually handled as part of an office relocation, where workstations are dismantled and rebuilt to the new floor plan.
Can you take away my old furniture?
Yes, as a separate job. New furniture almost always replaces something, and that something rarely fits in a council pickup. We can remove it in the same visit — see rubbish removal — so the room is finished when we leave rather than half done.
How soon can you come?
Assembly jobs are usually available within the same week, and often sooner than a full move because they need a van rather than a truck. If your delivery date is still moving around, book the slot anyway — rescheduling costs nothing.
