Packing and Moving in Darwin

Packing and moving in Darwin done by trained packers, not the truck crew rushing it on the morning. We bring the cartons, pack the house, move it, and put it away in the cupboards at the other end. Or just the kitchen and the fragile items, if that is the part you would rather not do.

Packing for the Top End is its own job. Cardboard softens in this humidity, and a load leaving Darwin spends days on the highway before anyone opens it.

What actually breaks, and how we stop it

Almost nothing breaks because a truck braked hard. It breaks because a carton was packed badly, too heavy, half empty, or with the wrong things touching.

Darwin adds a failure point southern packing guides never mention. Cardboard pulls moisture out of the air here, and a softened carton loses the stacking strength everything else depends on. It never has to get rained on to give way.

  • Plates go in on edge, never flat

Stacked flat, the bottom plate carries everything above it and cracks. On edge, each holds its own weight. The most common breakage in any self-packed move.

  • Double-walled cartons, taped along the seam

Single-wall boxes and free ones from a shop storeroom have already sat in this air. They go soft at the base and fold under a stack.

  • Nothing over about 20 kilos

Books in small cartons, linen in large. Weight matters more here because the boxes come down an external staircase, not along a hallway.

  • Screens, mirrors and art travel flat

Flat cartons with corner protection, glass taped, never laid under anything. A load heading south stays stacked for days, not minutes.

How much of it do you want to do?

Most people land in the middle, doing the books and wardrobes and handing over the kitchen.

  • Full pack

We pack the whole house. You go to work, come home, it is done.

  • Fragile items only

Kitchen, glassware, china, art and screens. You handle the rest.

  • Kitchen only

The room everyone underestimates and nobody wants to do twice.

  • Unpacking only

You packed it. We will get it out and into the cupboards.

  • Pack, move and unpack

The lot, one team, one quote, one point of contact.

  • Materials only

Cartons and materials dropped at the door. Pack it yourself.

  • Packing for storage

Sealed for months in Top End humidity, not a short drive. Storage.

  • Office packing

Crates and labelling for a commercial move. Office removals.

The half of the job everyone forgets to book

Packing has a deadline. Unpacking does not, which is why cartons are still stacked in the spare room months later.

We unpack into the cupboards, not onto the benchtop. The distinction matters, because unpack to benchtop is what most of this industry means by the word, and it leaves every item sitting out for you to put away. Crockery into the kitchen, clothes into wardrobes, books onto shelves is a different job.

There is a practical reason not to leave it here. A sealed carton of linen or paper sitting through a wet season is a mould risk that worsens the longer it stays shut.

The cartons go too. Flattened and taken, same day or on a return visit once you have worked through them. Nobody should be driving cardboard out to Shoal Bay a fortnight later.

How packing in Darwin is priced

Packing is charged hourly per packer, materials quoted separately so you pay for the cartons used. Ask every quote for both numbers and the crew size, because two packers for eight hours and four for four are the same work priced very differently on paper.

    Hours per packer

    Materials quoted separately

  • Crew

Sized to finish inside a day

  • When

Is it worth paying someone to pack?

Packing a three-bedroom house properly takes most people two or three weekends. A crew does it inside a day because it is all they do.

It depends on what your weekends are worth. With time and care, self-packing saves real money and we will happily just sell you the cartons. Short on notice or moving with small kids, packing is the first thing worth handing over. One more thing to weigh sits in the questions below: how your cover treats a box you packed yourself.

What affects your quote

  • Size of the home

Bedrooms, and how full the cupboards actually are.

  • How much we pack

Whole house, fragile items only, or just the kitchen.

  • Fragile content

China, glassware, art and instruments take longer per carton.

  • Where it is going

A load bound for Adelaide or Perth is packed to a heavier standard.

  • Access

Carrying cartons down an external staircase adds time to the day.

  • Unpacking

All of it, or just the essentials for night one.

Proper cartons, not supermarket boxes

Free boxes have carried one load already and sat in a storeroom in this air. They fold when stacked, the one thing a moving carton must not do.

Book & standard cartons

Small for heavy, large for light. Double-walled and rated to stack in a loaded trailer.

Port-a-robes

Hanging wardrobe boxes so suits and uniforms arrive on the hanger, not folded damp.

Screen & picture cartons

Adjustable flat cartons for televisions, mirrors and framed artwork.

Paper, wrap & covers

Butchers paper, bubble wrap, tape, labels, mattress and lounge covers.

Size of the place and how much you want packed. Written quote back within two hours.

  2. 02 Step

    Materials arrive

Cartons dropped early so you can start on whatever you want to do yourself.

  3. 03 Step

    Packing day

Room by room, labelled as they go, usually the day before the truck.

  4. 04 Step

    Move and unpack

Everything travels, then goes from carton into cupboard. Empties collected after.

Four things most packers won't give you

  1. Real-time GPS tracking

A live link to your truck on moving day. You will know when it is ten minutes out.

  2. On-time guarantee

Packers arrive in the booked slot. A late pack pushes the whole move a day.

  3. No cancellation fees

Settlement or posting date moved? Reschedule the pack and the move at no charge.

  4. One dedicated coordinator

The same person for packing, moving and unpacking. Not three separate bookings.

Darwin packing questions

How much does a packing service cost in Darwin?
Labour is hourly per packer, materials quoted separately so you pay for cartons used. Ask for both figures and the crew size on every quote, because an hourly rate alone means nothing until you know how many people work and for how long. Send the bedroom count and a written quote comes back in two hours.
Do you supply the boxes, or do I have to buy them?
We supply the lot and deliver before packing day. Cartons, butchers paper, bubble wrap, tape, labels, port-a-robes and covers. Materials sit on the quote as their own line, unopened bundles come off the invoice, empties collected after. Rather pack yourself? We will just drop the materials.
How long does it take to pack a three-bedroom house?
Roughly a full day for two packers, longer if the kitchen is large or nothing has been thinned out. The figure that matters is packer-hours, not hours, so sixteen packer-hours is two people for a day or four for half. Unpacking runs about a third of that.
Can you pack just the kitchen and the fragile things?
Yes, the most common booking we take. Kitchen, glassware, china, artwork and screens by us, the rest left to you. A fraction of a full pack, and it removes the part that produces nearly all the breakages. Wardrobes are the other one worth handing over, since port-a-robes keep clothes on the hanger.
If I pack my own boxes, are the contents still covered?
Ask this of any mover, us included, before deciding. Across the industry a carton packed by the customer is treated differently from one packed by the crew. The usual position is that owner-packed cartons are covered for events like fire, collision or a truck rolling, but not for breakage inside a box that arrives undamaged outside, because nobody can show how it was packed. Up here there is a second reason to read the wording: narrower cover commonly excludes mould and mildew, and a carton of linen packed slightly damp in the wet needs no accident to be ruined. Get the wording from whoever moves you.
Do you unpack too, and what does unpacking actually mean?
Worth asking every company, because the word gets used two ways. Most of the industry means unpack to benchtop, items out of the carton and left on a surface for you to put away. We put things away properly. Have the whole house done, or just enough for night one.
Do you take the empty boxes away?
Yes, flattened and removed, same day or on a return visit once you have worked through them. Most companies leave it out of the quote and you find out afterwards. Ask before booking, because a three-bedroom pack leaves enough cardboard to fill a car boot several times.
What won't you pack?
Nothing flammable or pressurised, so no aerosols, gas bottles, fuel, paint, solvents or pool chemicals. No open food or liquids, no perishables, live plants or ammunition. Jewellery, cash, passports, medications and keys stay with you rather than ride on a truck, and we point out anything we think belongs in that group.
Do I need to be home while you pack?
Not all day, but someone with authority at the start and the finish. At the start we walk through and mark anything off limits, a room, a safe, the bag you are keeping. At the end you check the carton inventory before signing. In between, go to work and we will ring if needed.
Do the packers come on the same day as the truck?
Usually the day before. Packing and loading are different jobs and stacking them into one day is how moves run late. A small unit can work same day. Unpacking is normally the day after delivery, once furniture is in place. Give us both dates and we line the slots up.
How many cartons will a three-bedroom house need?
Between fifty and eighty standard cartons for an average three-bedroom, plus three to five port-a-robes and a few flat ones for screens and framed pieces. A one-bedroom unit is nearer twenty five. It swings on what sits in the garage and under the house, so materials are quoted as an estimate then billed on the count used.
Will the cartons hold up in the humidity?
They will if they are the right cartons. We use double-walled stock and tape the seam rather than one strip across the join, because the failure point here is the base giving way under a stack. Packed cartons sit on a pallet or batten, not on a slab, since a slab sweats and moisture travels up through the cardboard.
Do you pack for an interstate move out of Darwin?
Yes, packed to a heavier standard than a local job. A load leaving for Adelaide, Perth or the east coast is on the road for days, stacked the whole way, with corrugations and real heat in the trailer. That means fuller cartons with no voids, more care about what sits under what, and flat cartons for glass.
I'm on a posting, can you pack for that?
Yes. If the relocation runs under a Defence contract, the appointed provider handles the contracted uplift and you deal with them for that. Everything outside it we can take on, whether that is a partner's belongings, items off the entitlement, an early pack, or storage in between. Posting season books out early here.
Do you take beds apart and put them back together?
Yes, standard beds come apart and go back together as part of the move, fittings bagged and taped to the frame. Cots, loft beds and gas lift bases we look at first and say honestly, because some are not built to come apart twice. Flat-pack is the real risk, since particle board rarely survives a second assembly.
